I wonder if people consider this role a ‘waste’ of his talent too. Because it was a big(-ish) production and a smaller (though definitely more than just 10 minutes) role.
Well, I certainly don’t. And I don’t, as a rule, think that only the big leading roles are what challenge an actor and contribute significantly to his portfolio. Admittedly, I’d have no problems with a movie that starred only him and had him on screen for 3+ hours (okay, exaggerating a bit here… although, no. I’d watch that!), but I think those smaller roles are just as brilliant.

I’m probably the onely one who isn’t thrilled about Benedict being in Twelve Years a Slave.
Yes, it’ll probably be an okay film, and Benedict will probably be brilliant in it during those 10 minutes screen time.
But where’s the acting challenge?
I don’t want to see him being little more than an extra in big Hollywood productions. He is way too talented to be wasted like that. Hell, he’s played Hawking, Vincent van Gogh and Sherlock, he’s a leading actor who can easily carry any production.
I want to see him in large roles that are complex and difficult. I want him to be able to show his amazing acting skills, and I doubt he’s getting that chance in this minor role.
Okay, can we just all a) calm down and not get our knickers in a twist and b) do a bit of good old-fashioned research if we obviously have no knowledge about this project?
12 years as a Slave is nowhere near a “big Hollywood production”. Steve McQueen doesn’t do big, and he doesn’t do Hollywood. The only ‘Hollywood’ thing about the film is the fact that they have one Hollywood superstar among the cast: Brad Pitt. Despite being a hugely big name in the biz, Brad is definitely more than purely a Hollywood hot hunk/pretty boy.
Secondly, neither Hunger nor Shame were big productions. They were rather low budget, focusing strongly on the characters and the story told with minimal outer additions. I really don’t see why Steve McQueen should change that style of his so drastically to make this a “big Hollywood production.” And to go back to Brad Pitt, I’m very sure he’s also not going to get the amount of money he gets from big productions and agreed to do this because he was interested in the project, the story, the people he’d be working with.
Lastly, as it hasn’t even been confirmed yet which character Ben is going to play can we just not make assumptions about how much screen time he will have and how relevant his role is going to be until we know more?
Yes, Benedict is a great actor with a portfolio of various challenging and complex roles. He’s also a grown-up and, on top of it, has been in the business for a pretty long time, which would make me think he’d know what he’s doing. Maybe this project is exactly what he’s been looking for and does offer a great role for him where he’ll be able to show how versatile and talented he is.
TL;DR: Inform yourselves a bit better and wait for further facts before you get all worked up about things that might (imho aren’t) the case.

And now, in her response to my email “OMG guess who’s been casted into the new Fassbender movie” she replied: “That can only be CUMberbatch then.” She’s not in the fandom or anything but has been enduring all my squeeing and flailing, bless her ^^
